Society has grown and progressed to the point that most of us no longer hunt and scavenge for food, but that we sit in classrooms and offices and work for money to afford a house and buy the packaged meats and chips, etc.
There are also plenty of distractions, such as clubs and organizations, service/assistance, other jobs, friends, church callings, and other such responsibilities.
I, myself, am struggling to survive and wade through the murkiness of every day life right now while working two jobs and taking 18 credits. It's rather absurd, I am aware, but I'm working towards a goal and this is the best way to work.
However, like many others, I am often growing more exhausted and overworked, leading to stress which ultimately has taken me down to the level of cranky attitudes, shortness of kind conversation, and limited smiles.
To all those who come in contact with me, I do apologize.
Now, I come to remedy this. For myself, and as well for you.
The trick?
Finding time for yourself.
To survive society itself, it's important that we appreciate and love ourselves. As we do so, we learn to understand ourselves. Oft times it may be more subconscious, but by focusing on habits and actions, you can learn to understand yourself as well, and constantly work on that.
We are human beings, not machines. We can't go and do exactly what we need to all the time without a break. Last week I took out about 7 hours of the entire week to hang out with friends. When you think about time in the week, it's not very much, is it? But for me, that's the most time I spent hanging out with friends in a long time.
We need other people as much as we need ourselves.
And we need time.
Time to recuperate, to rejuvenate, to rest, to relax, and to pull ourselves together.
We need to slow down and take time for ourselves. We need a chance to relax, such as mediate- I recently read an article about how it's scientifically proven to reorganize and recharge your mind. And it doesn't require hours!
As well as relaxing, we need that chance to chill out, and do something that makes us happy. Sometimes its hard to realize what really makes you happy. Sure, you do things in your free time- but what makes you laugh, smile, and (hopefully) grow?
For me, it's terrible, but I love television- movies and shows. They honestly have the power to make me smile, laugh (even when no one is around), they make me think, and it's something I can do while relaxing that I really enjoy.
For others, it might be hiking. It can be exercising, or baking. An activity that releases your stress and gives you a fresh start, no matter what time of day it is. It can vary in several options, and it's important that you find something that works for you.
And for a third piece, I mentioned this before: we need people. Humanity was meant to stay together and to always be connecting. Personally, I like building strong connections. I work in customer service, but there are few people whom I wish to spend time with while I'm not working. There are people that understand us, better or worse, and are there for us. Others just like people in general, which is completely fine as well, and doesn't require as much commitment. But we do need to use some of our time with others in order to pull ourselves together again.
By taking these opportunities, by finding time for ourselves, we can start the day fresh all over again. And trust me, I know I need it. And I can't be the only one.
So here's what you need to do:
Find a time to relax, and stop. Just take a seat, or lie down.
Do something you love.
And spend at least a few minutes with a person you enjoy.
Happy Monday, folks.
